Asbury UMC Bettendorf recognized by Bettendorf Community School District

January 10, 2018

By Pastor Heather Dorr

Asbury was one of ten business and community partners recognized by Bettendorf Community School District on Monday, January 8, 2018.

At a presentation during the school district Board Meeting, Asbury was awarded for being a Business/Community Partner. Asbury was nominated by Jefferson Elementary School, one of nine schools in the district. Asbury has consistently provided Backpacks with Snacks to underprivileged students and their families once a month for ten years. They also recruit church members to volunteer to create positive adult relationships with students, work with them academically, and become lunch buddies. In addition, their ministries have reached out to brainstorm ways they can help students, including providing vouchers for underprivileged student families to Asbury’s thrift store where clothing and household items can be purchased.

Jefferson Elementary School principal, Lana LaSalle, is a member of Asbury. She has noticed what a difference Asbury’s ministries have made for the students and their families. Jefferson Elementary is the home to 146 students, 21-24 of whom have been served this year by the Backpack Program. Hunger and unstable home lives make it difficult for students to flourish. Ministries like Asbury’s relationship with Jefferson Elementary help get food in the student’s stomachs and give them positive adult relationships to build them up.
Asbury’s Church Council is discerning how we can be “Difference Makers” in our community, beyond the walls of the church. If you have any questions about our Backpack Program or our relationship with Jefferson Elementary, you can get in contact with Pastor Dorr. We are excited to share the news of this recognition and to continue to be in ministry with our community in Bettendorf.
